The Concept of Love in Ovids Metamorphoses :: Ovid Metamorphoses Essays

The Concept of make do in Ovids Metamorphoses In Ovids Metamorphoses, the concept of love seems to vary from book of facts to character. In one case, a god in the progress to of a mankind desperately seeks a particular woman and refuses to relent until he has her. In another instance, a womanly goddess c ars deeply for a man and goes to great lengths to protect him from danger. In yet another case, both who are arranged to be married seem indifferent about the matter. This anti-epic certainly does not follow the adventurous theme of the epic. There is no protagonist hero to focus on unless you visualize the gods prey as the hero in his/her escape. The assembled books seem to be more of a recording of the misdeeds of the gods. It appears that Ovid wanted to write about the desires of gods and masses instead of a great adventure. Ovids work ridicules the concept of spousal and harmony between the sexes. It paints men and women as individual creatures who have little desire of c onnector with the opposite sex. The male gods are impelled by Cupids situation to chase certain female characters. Of course, the female characters are not interested and choose to outsmart capture so that they may continue with their individual desires. When the female god Venus falls for a mankind male and lays with him, she goes to great lengths to protect him from the antic animals. She specifically tells him to be bold when you approach the timid animals, those who are quick to flee but do not be audacious when you face undaunted beasts (Ovid 936). The man Adonis chose not to heed the gods warning and went on to hunt a wild boar with the aid of his hounds. The boar that Venus despised killed the human that she lusted after. This is another example of individual wants taking precedence over the joined couple. Pygmalion was so much of an individualist that he created his own mate from ivory. The Concept of Love in Ovids Metamorphoses Ovid Metamorphoses EssaysThe Concept o f Love in Ovids Metamorphoses In Ovids Metamorphoses, the concept of love seems to vary from character to character. Progressivism :: The Progressives

The progressive believed that by applying a more uncorrupt form of democracy they could in fact fix the already corrupt democracy especially at the state and city levels. The progressives believed that if given a chance the absolute majority of voters would elect honest respectable officials unlike those take by the corrupt policy-making machine but to do this they needed people to vote. So they compiled numerous methods for increasing the participation of the average citizen in political decisions. The secret ballot box, by using the method adopted by the Australians the voter would not be manipulated by the political party that would affect a voters decision by standing next to a ballot box and intimidating him or her. This method was first accepted by Massachusetts in 1888 and proved to be really popular by 1910 all voting states adopted this method. The progressive governor of Wisconsin Robert La Follete introduced the method of direct primaries in which the majority vote wou ld elect the party candidates for the state and federal shares. This method was used to try to minimize the power of political bosses to try to keep the corrupt officials from gaining office once again. The direct election of state senators was also a plus for the progressives for many years the senators had been selected by the vote of the state general assembly. The corrupt state legislature would then of course vote for the corrupt official for senate. After a while the senate begun to look like a club for the rich man. In 1913 the 17th amendment required all that all U.S senators be elected by the popular vote. By calling for Initiative, referendum, and recall the Progressives allowed by initiative to take part in the process of having a legislature pass a bill, to allow voters to vote on proposed laws on their ballots by way of referendum, and finally recall which allowed voters to remove an unsatisfactory politician from office by majority vote before the end of his or her term.

The Search for an Honorable Leader in Hamlet and Macbeth Essay

The Search for an Honorable Leader in Hamlet and Macbeth       Hamlet clearly defines a good leader in this passage in Hamlet    Look here, upon this picture, and on this, The counterfeit presentment of two br opposites. See, what a grace was seated on this brow Hyperions curls the front of Jove himself An eye like Mars, to scupper and command A station like the herald Mercury New-lighted on a heaven-kissing hill A combination and a form indeed, Where every divinity did seem to set his seal To give the world assurance of a man. Act III Sc. IV   He states that an individual must attain the qualities grace, leadership, closely roundedness, and reverence. Using Hamlets definition, Macbeth would be considered the exact opposite and in many ways the antagonist to Hamlets assertion of honorable leader. Macbeth contained qualities that tarnished his prestige in the blink of an eye, and his lack of index to process certain decisions he made revealed his innate character which was ultimately beheaded.   One of the most important characteristics for a prosperous leader to have is grace, which Macbeth knew nothing about. He was a war-hero, and was uninterested in what society perceived him to be. His superstition and dependence on the witches visions show his weakness as a character, and especially as a leader. His beliefs in the witches eventually lead him down the wrong path when he returns to the witches for another proclamation of their visions, which all argon apparently true, but interpret by Macbeth. In the end, as the visions become reality, Macbeth realizes that he has failed to grasp a hold of the tangible aspects of his life, and wa... ... loudly for him. (Act V Sc. II) In his closing statement, Fortinbras shows his grace and well-roundedness by honoring Hamlet, and understanding that he too went through what Fortinbras himself had to go through his entire adult life, living without his father. For thos e reasons, Fortinbras is a true leader, and the best representation in these two plays of a leader according to Hamlets definition.   In both plays, many characters are portrayed as being multi-layered, and viewed through many perspectives. Many characters are presented as one thing, but as the play continues, the layers peel, and the character is quickly defined as something different. As Macbeth fought to keep sane, his leadership was hastily tainted. Fortinbras on the other hand, kept his mind set on his goal, and achieved it proving him to be the true leader.

Farmers, for example, have it a lot easier now than they did in the early 1900s. More advanced farm equipment is the reason for this. Aside from all the good things that arise from new machinery, there is also a few down falls. Many people loose their jobs because of all the new high-tech machinery. For this reason, I am sure some believe that progress is not always for the better. What if in the future, machinery started dominating everyones job, what would we do then?
